Take notes on a relevant conversation you overhear that pertains to your beat.

Date:  December 3, 2025
Location: Student Center Café
Two students were discussing the recent increase in bike thefts on campus.

One student said, “I can’t believe someone stole a bike right outside the library in broad daylight.”    The other replied, “Yeah, I heard campus police are going to start giving out free bike locks.”

Both agreed that more security cameras are needed, especially near the residence halls and main walkways.

One student mentioned they don’t always feel safe walking back to their dorm at night, especially after late classes.

They also talked about wanting more safety escorts available in the evenings.

The conversation ended with one student planning to attend the upcoming SGA Town Hall to ask about campus safety measures.

Reflection:
This conversation highlights real concerns students have about theft, personal safety, and the effectiveness of current security measures. Their suggestions more cameras and safety escorts could be valuable interview questions for campus police or administrators. The mention of the SGA Town Hall shows students want to be heard and involved in decisions about campus safety.

Go to a place relevant (virtual or in-person) to your beat (List what you hear and see, plus one story idea. Blog about it on your beat blog). Crime beats can scan a police blotter, orcampus safety report, or public record. Summarize a possible story idea.

Find a press release ( not a newspaper article) from the past six months, provide the link and reasoning why it’s a beat story. Post to blog.

Spot an item on a bulletin board or digital screen or message board on campus that’s relevant to your beat (take a pic and upload it to your blog).
